After she and Hawkeye had been talking to Colonel Potter about getting a pregnancy test, Margaret walked back to her tent and sat on her bed. "I don't know if there's anyone in there yet...but I really sort of think there is." She placed a gentle hand on her stomach.
The blond nurse put her feet up and laid down on the bunk. 'Why don't I believe him about not letting me go through all of this alone?' She asked herself, almost angry with that voice inside her head. The one that sounded just like her... She wanted to believe Hawkeye, she really did. But there was something about the man that made her feel like he was feeding her a line of horse hockey, as Colonel Potter would put it.
There was a knock on the door. "Come in." Margaret called, not wanting to get up.
"Hi." Hawkeye stepped in, almost whispering.
"Hey." She sat up. "What is it?"
"Can we talk...about all of this..." He asked, his eyes showing just how concerned he was.
"I guess so. Pull up a chair." She motioned to the chair that was by her desk.
"Right." He grabbed it and sat in it in front of her and took one of her hands. "Look, I know I'm not the most committed guy you've ever met, but when you said you were pregnant, this surge of jealousy for Donald ripped through me like the bullets that I have to remove from those kids that come through here everyday."
Margaret listened to the man in front of her and nodded.
"Margaret, I would do anything for you and this baby. I swear on my life that I won't let anything hurt you or that precious bundle in there." He motioned toward her stomach. "I just want you to know that I'll be there for you. I really will." He shook his head. "I just wanted to tell you that again since you didn't really seem like you believed me before..." He got up and started heading out the door.
"Wait." She stopped him. When he turned around, she got up and walked toward him. "I want to believe you Hawk. But, I've been hurt way to many times..." The blond sighed. "We don't even know if we're getting worked up over anything! What happens if the rabbit's ovaries stay the same and I'm not pregnant? What happens then? Are you just going to leave me for some other nurse like nothing ever happened, or would you stay by my side?" Her voice cracked with emotion, "When I leave Donald, which I am definitely going to do....would it be for a man that actually supports me? Would that man be the same as this baby's father?" She broke out in a little cry, "Something happened for me out in that hut that night, other than the possible baby being made," she added, "I realized that I have never felt that way about a man before in my life! I thought I had felt that way about Donald, but the only one I've ever felt like this for was you! I LOVE you, but I don't know why!" She yelled, turning around, her shoulders shaking from the crying she was doing.
