"Margaret, I'm sorry I forgot to meet you in your tent. I feel horrible." Hawkeye stood at the sinks by the blond where she was washing her face and trying to get the horrible taste out of her mouth. She wasn't making any eye contact with him and he thought she was acting a little strange.
"It's okay Hawk..." She tried to be strong, but her voice broke a little with emotion.
"Come on Major, what is it?" He asked, putting a caring hand on her shoulder.
"Being a little formal aren't we?" She grabbed a towel and dried her face, but there were still tears rolling down her cheeks that she dabbed away with the back of her hand.
"Sorry." He gave her one of his crooked smiles that drove any girl with a pulse wild.
"Can we talk now?" She asked, her voice a little husky still.
"Sure, sure." Hawkeye gently guided her over to the benches and they both sat down.
"This is very important Captain..." The Major pointed out.
"Now aren't you being a little formal?" He teased her. When she gave him a warning look, he apologized.
"It's okay, we just really need to talk...about something that happened awhile ago on our way to the 8063rd..." She reached over and grabbed his hand with hers.

"Okay, I'll be serious now, I'm listening...what's wrong?" Hawkeye said.
Margaret looked at him and sighed, she wasn't sure how she was suppossed to say this to him, she wasn't even sure it was true...she could bring herself to believe it. "Hawkeye...I, I'm...I think I'm...I-I." No matter how she tried to say it she just couldn't say it.
Hawkeye looked at her concerned, "Margaret, come on, out with it."

The few tears that were already slipping down her cheeks now became a full fledged sob as she rested her head in her hands. "It doesn't get any worse than this!" She said in between sobs.
"Margaret, what is it? What do you think you are?" Hawkeye gently put his arms around her. She lifted her head and rested it on his offered shoulder.
"I think I'm uh...pregnant." The head nurse said into his shoulder.
Hawkeye didn't understand what she had said, it was so muffled. "What's that?" He asked, looking her in the eyes and wiping away the tears.
"I said....I think I'm...pregnant." She whispered the last word, the word that could change the rest of her life, and the life of the man who's arms she was in now.
"Why is that so bad Major?!" Hawkeye exclaimed excitedly. "Congratulations! Have you told Donald yet?" He gave her a quick hug. "Sorry." He placed a gentle hand on her stomach but she stood up fast.
"No I haven't told Donald!" Margaret snapped.
"Why not?" Hawkeye asked, standing up as well.
"WEREN'T YOU LISTENING?! I said that this whole thing had to do with what happened in that abandoned hut when we were trying to get to the 8063rd! I haven't seen Donald in four months and I think I'd be showing if the baby that I'm pretty sure I'm carrying was his!" She snapped at him, but started crying again.
"You mean...?" The chief surgeon stepped over to the (possibly) expecting mother. She nodded. "Margaret, do you know for sure?" He asked, voice low and comforting.
"No." Margaret shook her head and turned around. Hawkeye put his hands on her arms.
"It could be a lot worse you know..." His eyes were soft with emotion, just finding out that he could be a father.
"How?" She asked, voice strained from the crying.
"The father of that baby, if there is one anyway, might not have loved it and the mother as much as I do already. He or she could have ended up with a real jerk as a dad." He smiled, wiping away more of the tears that fell onto Margaret's cheeks. A faint smile spread across her face as well.

"I guess you're right, it COULD be a lot worse, it could have also happened with someone I didn't love, or could never love," she said with a slight smile though tears were still falling lightly. Then a thought struck her, "But you do know that if there is a baby, automatic discharge, I'll be sent away from here, nowhere to go, and all alone with a baby..." she started to cry again, "Oh God, how am I going to make this work? I can't do this, I just can't."
Hawkeye held her, he shook his head, "No, no you're not going to be alone, I'm in this with you. And you'll have some where to go, I won't allow you to do this by yourself. Maybe you can't do it by yourself, even though you are strong and could probably pull it off, but I'll be here for you. You're not in this by yourself, Okay?" he said wiping her tears away. She didn't speak, she only nodded, even though she didn't believe him. As much as she wanted to she couldn't and she didn't.
